The Path to 2028: Women’s Soccer in Atlanta

Georgia has a legacy in women’s soccer history thanks to the 1996 Summer Olympics. The Games marked the first time women’s soccer was included as an official Olympic medal event, where the U.S. Women’s National Team captured its first-ever gold medal.

More than 76,000 fans attended the championship matchin Athens, GA, helping spark momentum for the launch of the Women’s United Soccer Association, the first fully professional women’s soccer league in the United States.

2001-2003


The Atlanta Beat (WUSA) lands in Atlanta, reaching the league’s Founders Cup championship finals in 2001 and 2003.

2005-2016


The Atlanta Silverbacks Women arrives, serving as a bridge for professional and aspiring players, winning the W-League Championship in 2011.

2010-2011


The Atlanta Beat returns to the metro area as part of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS).

2014


The USWNT plays an international friendly match against Russia at the Georgia Dome, defeating them 8-0.

2016


The USWNT plays their final match at the Georgia Dome, defeating the Netherlands 3-1.

2024


Atlanta hosts the opening matches of 2024 SheBelieves Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in front of 50,664 fans, setting an attendance record for a USWNT domestic friendly.

2025


NWSL awards its 17th expansion franchise to Atlanta, backed by Arthur Blank and AMB Sports and Entertainment.

2028


NWSL Atlanta kicks off its inaugural season.
